Written in the 50s as a 10th century Viking epic. Apparently a megahit overseas. Bengtsson apparently said he just wrote something he thought would be fun to read, and it springs off the page. If you've seen The Northman, it's like that but with Viking humor and a plot that travels all over Europe. So I guess the similarity is that there's plenty of people hacking bits off each other.
I can't remember if I read this in 2023 or 2022, but it's such a great read it would top either list.
